Relapse rarely happens without warning. It is often a process that begins weeks or even months before the physical act of using.
Relapse is a Process, Not an Event
Understanding the three stages of relapse—emotional, mental, and physical—can help you or a loved one intervene early.
1. Emotional Relapse
You aren't thinking about using, but your emotions are setting you up for it. Signs include: Anxiety, isolation, anger, poor eating or sleeping habits, and not asking for help.
2. Mental Relapse
A war is going on in your mind. Part of you wants to use, but part of you doesn't. Signs include: Thinking about people/places/things associated with use, glamorizing past use, lying, and planning a relapse.
3. Physical Relapse
This is the act of using the substance. It is usually the result of the previous stages being left unchecked.
Early Action:
If you recognize signs of emotional relapse, reach out immediately. Speak to a sponsor, therapist, or supportive friend. You don't have to do this alone.
