Addiction is often called a family disease because everyone is affected, especially children. Talking to them about a parent's addiction is difficult but necessary.
Honesty is Essential
Children often know more than we think. Hiding the truth can lead to confusion and anxiety. You don't need to share every detail, but you must validate their reality.
Use Age-Appropriate Language
For a young child: "Daddy is sick with a disease that makes him do sad things."
For a
teenager: "Mom is struggling with addiction, which is a serious medical condition that affects her
brain."
The "7 Cs"
Teach them the 7 Cs: I didn't Cause it, I can't Control it, I can't Cure it. But I can help take Care of myself by Communicating my feelings, making healthy Choices, and Celebrating myself.
Reassurance:
Constantly reassure them that they are safe and loved. Addiction in the family can make a child's world feel unstable; your consistency is their anchor.
